Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level standardized test administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven campuses of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) including Roorkee, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Bombay on behalf of the National Coordination Board-GATE The upcoming GATE Exam i.e. GATE 2020 will be conducted by IIT Delhi. It is conducted with the aim to examine the understanding of various engineering and science undergraduate subjects along with quantitative and reasoning ability.

GATE 2020 Exam Scores will be useful for admissions in Post Graduate Courses—M. Tech, M.S and Ph.D. at IISc, NITIE, IITs, NITs, IIIT, Government Engineering Colleges, and some foreign universities. You can also get admission into some MBA courses in some colleges like NITIE on the basis of your GATE score. Also, the ‘Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)’ of IIMs in which students are selected on the basis of their GATE Score.

Knowing your subjects and syllabus is extremely crucial to crack the GATE 2020 exam. GATE Syllabus for every stream is exhaustive and extensively covers 10 to 14 subjects from the engineering stream. GATE 2020 Exam Pattern:

Every candidate must know the exam pattern for GATE 2020 well in order to score well. Every candidate appearing for GATE 2020 is given 3 hours to complete a 100-mark paper. GATE 2020 will be a Computer Based Test (CBT) with 65 questions out of which 55 questions will be off the chosen subject and 10 questions of General Aptitude to test the language and the analytical skills of the candidate.

The GATE 2020 Exam will consist of two types of questions:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

MCQs are objective type questions with 4 options each.  The candidate has to choose the correct answer out of the given option. For 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect attempt and 2/3 mark for every incorrect 2-mark MCQ. Zero marks are awarded for unattempted questions. There is no negative marking for numerical answer type (NAT) questions. Students have to type in the answers using the virtual keypad available on the screen for the NAT questions. Students are also provided with an on-screen calculator to solve the questions.

For the paper codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, the General Aptitude section will carry around 15% of the total marks, the Engineering Mathematics will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 70% of the total marks will be assigned to the subject of the paper.

For the paper codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST and XL, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the marks while the remaining 85% of the total marks will be assigned to the subject of the paper.

An essential thing to go over before registering for the GATE 2020 Exam is the eligibility criteria. There are multiple GATE papers and the eligibility criteria for different streams is different.

GATE 2020 Application Form:

The GATE 2020 application form will be released in the fourth week of September 2019. Candidates will be able to access the GATE 2020 application form online through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). Registering for GATE 2020 in the stipulated time is necessary to be eligible to give the GATE 2020 examination.

Candidates can follow the steps given below to fill the GATE 2020 online application form:

Step 1

Registration:  The first step for an interested candidate is registration through GOAPS. Candidates will have to submit their name, email ID and mobile number during registration after which an enrolment number will be generated. This enrolment number along with a password generated by the candidate must be used for future logins.

Step 2

Filling Application Form: The next step is actually filling the GATE 2020 application form. Candidates are required to provide their personal, educational and contact information. Details about the candidate’s college and valid photo ID information also has to be entered in the application form. At this step, candidates must also choose the GATE paper and GATE exam centre for themselves.

Step 3

Uploading Images:  Candidates photograph and signature along with required documents has to be scanned and uploaded by the candidates as per the specifications mentioned on the GOAPS portal.

Step 4

Application Fees Payment: Candidates have to pay the application fee online using net banking/debit card/credit card.

Step 5

Application Form: Submission After completing Step 1 to Step 4, the candidates must submit their GATE 2020 application form.

GATE 2020 Application Form Status:

Candidates can check the status of their GATE 2020 application form after the submission of the form. The application form status helps candidates know whether or not the respective authorities have received their form and about their eligibility status too. The candidates will have to log in through GOAPS to check their status and if any correction is required in the application form or not. The following are the different statuses of the application form:

GATE 2020 Application Form Correction:

Registered candidates can use the facility of application form correction from the last week of September to third week of November 2019 (tentative dates). To make corrections in the application form, the candidates will have to login through their GOAPS account. Some of the information will be open for correction while some of it will be withheld. The following will be available for making changes:

  • Name of the candidate
  • Date of Birth
  • Name of Parent/Guardian
  • Country of Residence
  • Parent/Guardian’s Mobile Number
  • Correspondence Address
  • Qualifying Degree Details

Along with this, the candidates will also be allowed to change their category/gender/PwD status/Dyslexia and other similar learning disabilities within a given period of time.

GATE 2020 Exam Analysis:

GATE 2020 results will be released by IIT Delhi in the 3rd week of March 2020 on their website for all 24 papers.

How to Download GATE 2020 Score Card

  1. Candidates will have to log in through the online portal-GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System) for downloading their GATE 2020 scorecard.
  2. To download their scorecard, candidates need to enter their enrolment number/email ID as well as the password set by the candidate.
  3. Candidates can use the scorecard tab to download a digital copy or print a physical copy.

The raw marks obtained by candidates appearing in GATE papers is normalised using a formula. They are then used in the formula for calculating the GATE score. The raw marks obtained by candidates who have appeared for all the papers held in single sessions (other than CE, CS, EC, EE and ME) are used in the score calculation formula to get the GATE scores. The raw marks of candidates are out of 100 while the GATE scores are out of 1000. GATE scores are valid for 3 years from the date of announcement of the results.

GATE Examination Cut-Off and Stats:

Approximately 10 Lakh students appear for the GATE examination each year. Out of which, on an average only 12-17% students who attempt the GATE exam pass. Candidates who are among the top rankers (AIR 200 and less) have an opportunity to get direct admissions to the IISc and IITs. GATE Scores from 600 to 800 stand a chance of a call to these institutes depending upon the discipline applied to. 

GATE 2020 Alternative Examinations:

  • Amrita University M. Tech Programme

Candidates who qualify in GATE 2020 can seek admission into the different M. Tech programs at Amrita University. The university has campuses in Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Coimbatore. Even the candidates who do not have valid GATE scores can apply for the same courses on the basis of their academic performance.

  • BITS HD

BITS conducts a Higher Degree Entrance Exam for admissions to its M.E programmes. Candidates have to give the exam to try their luck for admissions into M.E courses across the BITS campuses.

  • Central Universities Common Entrance Test or CUCET

The Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) is the common entrance test or CET for admissions to ten Central Universities of the country including Haryana, Jammu, Jharkhand, Kashmir, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Please note that M. Tech Programmes are offered by only three of these ten central Universities viz. Rajasthan, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

  • IIITM-K All India Admission Test

Candidates seeking admission to M. Sc courses can give the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala All India Test. This test is followed by an interview and is a great alternative for MSc aspirants.

  • JIIT PGET

Jaypee Group of Institutes is a good option for technical aspirants. Candidates who wish to seek admission to M. Tech courses can apply for JIIT PGET. Also, candidates who have qualified in GATE can also apply with their GATE score.

  • LNMIIT PG

Candidates can appear for a written test for admissions to the M. Tech Programs at the LNM Institute of Information Technology, Rajasthan. For those who fail their GATE Examination or aren’t too sure about how well they will fare, this alternative will certainly prove to be helpful.

  • MUOET

Manipal University conducts the MUOET for candidates who seek admission to M. Tech programmes. The university has campuses around India and is regarded as one of the top universities in India.

  • Nirma University M. Tech Programme

You can easily secure admission to PG programmes like M. Tech at Nirma University (Gujarat) through the GATE scores. Apart from this, another way would be to appear for a written test conducted by Nirma University for the vacant seats after first counselling.

  • PDPU M. Tech Programme

Candidates can appear for Written Aptitude Test conducted by Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University. Once you clear the exam you have to appear for a Personal Interview. This university is based in Gandhi Nagar area of Gujarat.

  • Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) Karnataka

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and The Karnataka Examinations Authority on behalf of the State of Karnataka conducts PGCET for candidates who seek admission to M.E./M.Tech courses. Candidates who have qualified in GATE don’t need to give the entrance exam but do have to apply along with the other candidates.

  • Post-Graduate Engineering Common Entrance Test (PGECET)

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University on behalf of the APSHCE (Andhra Pradesh state higher education council) is another option for GATE aspirants. Admissions to M.E. / M. Tech/M. Pharm/M. Arch / M. Plg (full time) in Andhra Pradesh fit in the purview of this exam.

  • SRMGEET

SRM University, one of the most prestigious universities in the nation, conducts the SRM Graduate Engineering Entrance Test for engineering students for admissions to their master’s programme. The Entrance Test is conducted online followed by an interview.

  • TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test)

Anna University Chennai on behalf of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu conducts the TANCET for candidates who seek admission to ME/M.Tech Degree programmes in Tamil Nadu. The above university offers Master of Engineering (M. E) / Master of Technology (M. Tech) /Master of Architecture (M. Arch)/Master of Planning (M. Plan).

  • VITMEE

VIT University’s online exam—VIT Master Engineering Entrance (VITMEE) is a premier exam for selecting candidates to VIT M Tech programs. These programs are available at the Vellore and Chennai campuses.
