With the idea of starting your CAT Preparation, the first question is often what book to refer for the prep? With number of books writers increasing every year it certainly becomes difficult to choose from such variety. You need the books that follow the current CAT pattern and are comprehensive containing key topics with practice questions.

Now a lot of candidates appearing for CAT do not really pay a lot of importance to the material and just pick any book because the seller recommends it. However, it is important for a candidate to clearly go through a reviews before picking books for the preparation. Since the year 2015, there have been changes in the exam pattern and hence it is also important to keep in mind that you only have to pick those books based on the current pattern. We suggest going through a number of websites, books, public reviews, etc. and make an informed decision.

To help you, we have listed the most recommended books that we and the past year candidates found extremely helpful:

CAT PREPARATORY MATERIAL BY ARUN SHARMA

Firstly Arun Sharma’s books are not just oriented towards one section of CAT but it is oriented towards all sections of CAT. So you have all the sections of CAT covered by the same author in the same pattern and with the changes updated in each section.  His preparatory material for CAT is currently the best in the market. All his books are always updated with the changes in the patterns of questions with respect to the CAT Examination.

In his books, you would find questions not just of one but multiple levels of difficulty. A number of puzzles are also asked which makes the study of CAT a bit more interesting. Also you will find a number of mock tests and previous years questions in the books which is of a huge advantage to any candidate as you may get an idea of how the questions are asked.

It is important to note that though we suggest you to pick Arun Sharma for all subjects, it is not necessary to pick only his books because  majority of the students pick. However you must be very careful of the pattern of content, the level of difficulty and such factors while picking your desired books or study material for the preparation of your CAT Examination.

Quantitative Aptitude:

Quantitative Aptitude also known as quants is a very essential section which requires more practice than you would need in any other section of CAT. Hence choosing the correct books to practice from is very crucial here.  Firstly you need to practice a lot. The more you practice, the more idea of the type of questions asked is what you would understand. Second of all you should focus on your weaker sections and practice those type of questions to strengthen those concepts. As of Quants, a lot of positive reviews were received for Quantum CAT by Sarvesh K Verma. Also it is important to just stick to one book for concepts or clarity of concepts and only one or two books for practice of questions would be more than enough.

VA- RC :

VA -RC ALSO KNOWN as Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension is one of the most neglected subjects of CAT.  It basically involves you knowing and testing your vocabulary and English grammar skills. Though most of the candidates may confuse it with being a cake walk, you must remember that CAT is no cake walk. And so they would not ask anything in an examination which involves you knowing your English grammar. Hence, First you should be thorough with all your grammar basics. Brush through your basic grammar because it will be extremely helpful. Next, you may pick up Normal Grammar Rules for brushing through your grammar.

For reading comprehension you may pick any book you feel which may enhance your reading skills. It could be an article, a novel, a script anything which is at a higher level than your levels of grammar.

LR-DI:

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation is another section of CAT which holds a lot of importance in the exam. You must know that if you know only the basics of how to solve a particular question or a type of question, it may not be helpful. You must be having a lot of practice for this section as it involves a lot of brainstorming. For Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation, you may pick Arun Sharma itself because it is the best book for these sections in the market and also comprises of a good level of questions which can be of great use during the examination. Also practicing previous years papers would be very helpful for this section as you may know the level of questions that appear in the paper.
