What is the GRE?

GRE exam : Structure and Eligibility

The Graduate Record Examination General Test is a test that is required for masters and doctoral degree programs in universities of US, Canada, Germany, and the UK. One can appear for GRE 5 times in a year with an interval of 21 days between two consecutive exams. The GRE scores are valid up to 5 years. You can take this test on computer or on paper. GRE exam time varies depending upon the version of the test. The GRE computer based test is 3 hours and 40 minutes and GRE paper based test is of 3 hours and 30 minutes. 

GRE exam tests you across the following broad skills:

Verbal Ability:

Verbal Ability incorporates things like analogies, vocabulary utilization,antonyms,sentence culminations,synonyms,pursuing perception question, etc.It tests your capacity to frame ends from composite materials, perceive connections among ideas and words and decide the relationship between various pieces of sentences. There is an emphasis on complex verbal reasoning skills. 

Quantitative Ability:

Quantitative ability tests your high school level mathematics and your skills in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. It checks candidates comfort level of pertaining and analyzing quantitative reasoning and data interpretation questions. Candidates can use onscreen computers for the computer adaptive test.

Analytical Ability:

GRE test contains two separate analytical writing tasks which includes analyzing an issue task and argument task respectively. The issue task contains two topics of which one is chosen by the candidate and he/she is expected to present the writer’s position. They have to present their point of view with examples and reasoning. In the argument task, candidates analyse the logic of the position and suggest any fault in reasoning. The Analytical Ability section measures your ability to understand complex ideas, construct and evaluate arguments, and sustain a focused and coherent discussion.

GRE – ELIGIBILITY:

There is no age and qualification bar to take the GRE examination. The only requirement is to produce the proof of identity prescribed by GRE. Any student who has completed their under-graduation can take the GRE to get admission in a PG program in foreign countries.

Although the students must check university websites as different universities have different score and criteria requirements. In India, passport is the identity proof for GRE exam.
