Introduction to GMAT in Mumbai

The full form of GMAT is ‘The Graduate Management Admission Test’. GMAT is a standardised test used for admission into business school and other specialised master's programs. The GMAT test is designed to measure relevant skills of a student that is required for admission into MBA programs, most notably Executive Reasoning skills. GMAT is a valuable part of the students application into MBA Programs and Business Schools as it serves as a common co-efficient to compare applicants to each other. The GMAT is taken on a computer and is conducted by the GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council). The GMAT is a type of Computer Adaptive Test (CAT). GMAT Format and Sections The GMAT Test contains 4 sections: Analytical Writing Assessment - This section of the GMAT measures critical thinking and communication of ideas. Integrated Reasoning - This section of the GMAT measures your ability to analyse data and evaluate information presented in multiple formats. Quantitative Reas

Q. How many questions are on the GMAT exam?

A. The GMAT exam is divided into 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment (1 essay topic), Integrated Reasoning (12 Questions), Quantitative Reasoning (31 Questions), Verbal Reasoning (36 Questions). Total GMAT questions - 80 You can now choose the order in which you attempt GMAT sections.

Q. When should I take the GMAT exam?

You can appear for the GMAT exam anytime in the year. The GMAT exam date must be booked by you online, as per availability. You can take the GMAT exam every 16 days, and for a maximum of 5 times a year. Your GMAT prep should be completed one year before your MBA Program begins. If you applying for the Fall Semester, you must complete the GMAT exam first attempt by July of the previous year. In case you need to give a second GMAT attempt, you must complete it by August end. If you are applying for the Spring Semester you must complete the GMAT first and second attempt by October.

Q. Is GMAT tougher than CAT?

GMAT and CAT are the most popular and widely accepted MBA entrance tests. 2 lakh candidates take the CAT exam every year and top 6 IIMs have around 2500 seats. Seeing these stats, you would need to score in the 99th Percentile to get admission into the Top Schools. Thus, it is highly competitive. Since GMAT is universally accepted, the ratio of number of seats available to the number of students that attempt it every year is better. Thus, GMAT is not as competitive as CAT. GMAT has a well defined structured syllabus. The GMAT exam questions come only from within this syllabus. CAT on the other hand, has a more vague syllabus. Hence the prep time for CAT is more than GMAT as the number of topics vary GMAT quantitative aptitude section is slightly easier than the one in CAT. However, the Verbal Section of the GMAT is more challenging than CAT.

Q. What is a good GMAT Score?

The GMAT exam is market out of 800 marks A good GMAT score is around 650. Top 10 business schools usually expect GMAT scores of 720 or above. The average GMAT score tends to be around 556. If you are calculating using percentile ranking, a GMAT score of 650 is equivalent to a 75% percentile ranking. To get into the Top 10 Business Schools, you must get a GMAT percentile ranking above 90%.

Q. How can I be eligible for the GMAT exam?

Age requirement - To be eligible for the GMAT exam, you must be at least 18 years old. If you want to give the GMAT exam between the age of 13 to 17, you must have a written letter of consent from your legal guardian. Academic Qualification - Even though you can give you GMAT exam earlier, your GMAT score can only be used to apply to Post Graduate Schools, hence you must have a Bachelors Degree to use your GMAT score in any applications. Number of Attempts - A person can give an attempt every 16 days, and a maximum of 5 attempts every year.
